Laser Engraved Coins

Coins have become the side project to the Slider project. In that I mean it was an easy change of Gcode to make these coins on the CNC lathe. No precision holes and almost half the thickness. The rest of the work ends up over at the laser. Just before the holiday season I started honing my laser skills even further.

Coins are very different than what I’m use to. This may be why I am so into them all of a sudden. It’s a fun challenge and with so many design choices it could get crazy. Add to that they are 2 sided!

Brass and titanium act very different when engraving. Brass can be burnt giving a dark layer while titanium can be anodized to a handful of colors. Brass can also be patina’d and worn in with a little steel wool giving them a deep old look while not ruining the details.

Would any of you be interested in a coin? Challenge Coin? Send me your thoughts. I don’t want to travel too far down the road and find out coins are on the way out like pogs, oh wait, pogs are back… you didn’t hear??
